Church halls, finished basements, VFW rooms, the back half of a restaurant. They share a shape: twice as long as they are wide, with the door at one end and a kitchen hatch at the other. You walk in and the far wall looks a hundred feet away, because visually it sort of is.
Rooms like this fight you in a specific way. Everything you hang emphasizes the length, and the length is the thing you want to hide.
Break the run into zones, or the room will do it for you
Left alone, a long narrow room sorts itself into two groups at opposite ends who never talk. Interrupt the length on purpose so it reads as two or three connected spaces instead of one corridor.
Vertical elements do this better than anything horizontal. Hanging tissue balls at 12 inches across, dropped at different heights in a cluster, create a visual break you can walk under. Put your one big statement on a long side wall, roughly a third of the way in from the entrance. Now the room's visual center is off the long axis, and people turn to face it, which redistributes the crowd sideways instead of stringing them out end to end.

- Chairs lined against both long walls. This is a school-gym reflex and it turns the middle into a runway nobody wants to cross.
- All the lighting at the ends, leaving a dim middle. A dark center makes the room read as two rooms rather than one connected space.

My honest opinion on the far wall: hang something, but keep it small and low-contrast. The moment it competes, you have told everyone the party is at the other end of the room, and half your guests will spend the night walking toward it.
