The hall unlocks at nine. Food arrives around ten, the first guests are in line well before noon, and somewhere inside that window a volunteer crew of eleven has to turn a room with beige walls and stacking chairs into a place where three hundred people will want to sit down and eat.
Nobody in that crew is folding napkins into swans.
Cover the walls before you touch the tables
Per minute spent, wall coverage changes a room more than anything you can put on a table. A backdrop that runs 30 feet long and 4 feet high, like the printed cornstalks or the pumpkin patch scene, goes up with two people on step stools and hides a stretch of institutional paint that no centerpiece can compete with.
Fall clings are the other fast option.
