Thirty four piece fall decorating kit with orange and yellow tissue fans, acorns, garlands and leaf cutouts

Harvest and Fall Party Ideas for Late October

How to throw a harvest party in the last week of October that reads as autumn rather than Halloween, with the decorations and food to match.

Not everyone wants a costume party. Some people want twenty friends, a pot of chili, and a house that looks like late October without a single rubber mask in it. That party is easier to run and harder to decorate, because the harvest look has no character to lean on.

No witch, no turkey, no mascot. Just color and texture and shape, which means you have to be more deliberate.

Harvest is a palette, not a theme

Start by picking two colors and refusing to add a third. Orange and golden yellow is the obvious pair. Red and orange is warmer and reads later in the season. Gold and red is the dressiest of the three and the one that survives into November.

Once the palette is set, every decision gets easier. You are no longer asking whether something fits a theme, only whether it is one of your colors.

The tissue and foil pieces in the Thanksgiving decorations collection are mostly sold by color pair, which makes this easy. A 14 foot 6 inch pageant garland in golden yellow and orange, a 12 foot leaf garland in red and orange, a nine foot metallic garland in red and gold. Pick your pair and ignore the rest.

One big surface does most of the work

Pick the largest flat thing in the room and commit to it. Usually that is the dining table or a wall behind the food.

For the table, a six foot paper runner at 11 inches wide covers the center and takes the gravy. For a longer buffet, go to a banquet roll. Chocolate brown, golden yellow and ivory plastic table rolls run 100 feet, enough for a church hall, and the sequined runners in orange and burgundy are the dressier option.

For a wall, the pumpkin patch backdrop is 30 feet by four feet, which is genuinely a whole wall rather than a corner of one, and it is thin plastic made to be taped straight up. That is one purchase and about fifteen minutes.

To fill a room rather than a wall, the 34 piece fall decorating kit holds three 25 inch tissue fans, two tissue balls, four tissue acorns, four 12 foot arcade garlands and 21 cutouts. The mix of hanging and wall pieces is the point. One kit covers a room in a way four of any single item does not.

Things that move

A harvest room with no movement looks like a display. This is the easiest fix available.

Twirly whirlys come six to a package in gold, orange and red, four at 24 inches and two at 36. Shimmering party whirls are 20 inches, six per package, and catch light rather than just spinning. The autumn triple whirl is 30 inches with three tiers, fuller than a single spiral and needing only a draft.

Hang them in doorways and ceiling corners where air actually moves. A spinner in the dead center of a still room is a wasted spinner.

The 25 inch tissue fan in red and orange is the other one worth having. It comes with a string, it opens big enough to anchor a wall on its own, and tissue has a texture foil does not.

Food for a cold night

Late October parties want food that holds on a table for three hours without attention.

  • Chili or a bean and sausage soup in a slow cooker, with bowls and spoons out beside it
  • Cornbread in a sheet pan, cut into squares, no plating required
  • A cider pot on low with cinnamon sticks and cloves in a tea ball
  • Roasted squash or sweet potato with butter and salt, served warm or room temperature
  • Apple crisp in the pan it baked in, with a serving spoon stuck in it

Ten inch banquet plates, not eight inch dinner plates, if chili and cornbread are both on the menu. And two napkins per guest, which is the number everyone gets wrong at every party.

The 9 ounce hot and cold paper cups handle cider, and three ply beverage napkins in deep colors sit under drinks without looking like an afterthought. All of it is in the solid color tableware range.

What I would leave out

The novelty wear. There is a fall leaf wig and an inflatable turkey leg, and both are genuinely funny at the right party, but they are a different party than this one. Costume novelty is what you were avoiding by not doing Halloween, and introducing one piece of it tips the whole room back toward theme party.

Also skip anything with text on it. A Give Thanks streamer is fine on November 20 and confusing on October 26.

If a few guests turn up expecting Halloween anyway, a quiet handful of pieces from the Halloween range near the door will satisfy them without changing what the rest of the house is doing.
