Somebody hangs a paper ghost over the server aisle on the first of October. By the tenth it has been clipped by four trays, taped back up twice, and is dangling by one corner over table nine. Nobody fixes it, because it is Friday and there is a forty minute wait.
That is the real problem with Halloween in a hospitality room, and it has nothing to do with taste. It is the six weeks of service that come after you put the stuff up.
Halloween decorations for bars and restaurants have to survive the calendar
Most operators hang decor in the last week of September and pull it down on November 1. Call it five or six weeks of grease vapor, HVAC cycling, condensation off pint glasses, a patio door opening every ninety seconds, and staff brushing the same corner four hundred times a shift.
Paper and tissue lose that fight. A tissue fan photographs beautifully and goes limp within a week anywhere near a dish pit. Printed plastic holds up. Sight lines from the bar top
Sit on one of your own stools before you buy anything. Your eye lands somewhere around 45 to 50 inches off the floor, and everything in that band is either the back bar, the taps, a screen, or the person across from you. That band is revenue. It is not decorating space.
Work above it and below it instead. The soffit over the back bar, the top edge of the mirror, the front face of the bar itself. Nothing goes on the bar top. Bartenders will move it inside one shift, it ends up in the well, and by Wednesday it is sticky.
Servers need the floor and the air above it
A loaded tray rides above shoulder height. Anything hanging in a service aisle has to clear that, which in practice means nothing lower than about seven feet anywhere a server walks. Push the overhead pieces into the middle of the dining room and out along the perimeter. A firework chandelier at 24 by 12 inches hangs well over a cluster of four-tops and stays out of the traffic pattern entirely.
Vertical surfaces are the safest real estate in a busy room. Restroom door covers at 5 feet by 30 inches fit a standard door and answer the question your hosts field most often. Barbed wire garland, silver or rusty, comes 12 feet to a package and wraps a host stand or the front edge of a buffet without projecting into anybody's path.
Fire code, before you buy, not the week of
This is the part people skip and then pay for. Assembly occupancies get looked at harder than houses, and October is exactly when inspectors go looking.
- Keep decor out of the clearance zone below sprinkler deflectors. Eighteen inches is the common requirement, and hanging pieces are the first thing that gets flagged.
- Never obscure an exit sign, an egress path, or emergency lighting, even partially.
- Many jurisdictions require decorative materials in assembly spaces to be flame retardant, and your marshal may ask to see documentation.
- Nothing combustible near heat lamps, candle flames, or the cook line. Ever.
Call your fire marshal in September and ask what they want to see. Five minutes on the phone beats a re-inspection in the middle of your best week of the quarter.
