Two hundred people are in the parking lot and roughly forty of them are asking the same question. Where does the line start. Where is the bathroom. Is this the entrance or is the entrance around the side. One volunteer in a reflective vest is answering all of it, over and over, and will keep answering it for three hours.
Signage is what replaces that volunteer. At a big trunk-or-treat, a school festival, or a church fall night, Halloween banners and signs stop being decoration and start being infrastructure.
The entrance has one job
People need to see the entry point before they park, or at least before they finish crossing the lot. That means something tall, something bright, and something that reads at a hundred feet.
Pennant banners do this better than lettered signs because motion and color register at distance where words do not. Readable from a distance means bigger than you think
Rough rule: an inch of letter height buys about ten feet of legibility, and that assumes good light and a clean background. At an evening event with headlights behind your sign, cut that estimate in half.
Which is why cursive is a bad idea outdoors, and why a chalkboard A-frame with hand-lettered arrows is one of the most common wastes of effort at these events. It looks charming in daylight at three feet. Nobody reads it at dusk from twenty.
Yard signs handle the middle distance well because you can plant a sequence of them. Walk your event backward from the parking lot and mark every place a person has to choose. Those are the only places signage matters. Everywhere else is decoration.

- Where the line forms, and which direction it grows.
- Restrooms. This is the single most-asked question at any large event.
- Where the route exits, so people leaving do not push back through people arriving.
Restroom marking is easy to solve in theme.
